James T. Smith

Father Smith was placed on administrative leave in 2002 after allegations that he had sexually abused minors. Prior to his leave, Smith reportedly held a part-time job in the domestic violence unit of the Queen’s District Attorney’s Office. A 2003 lawsuit accused Smith of molesting multiple minors, including a girl at Our Lady of Grace Church in Howard Beach during the late 1950s and early 1960s, as well as a boy at Holy Trinity Parish Church in Whitestone during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It has been reported that more than two dozen people have made similar complaints against Smith.  He died in 2012.
