Catholic Priest

Charles M. Kavanagh

Ordained: 1963

Monsignor Kavanagh was ordered to step down as Vicar for Development and as pastor of St. Raymond Parish in the Bronx in 2002.  Father Kavanagh was suspended from priestly ministry following allegations that he sexually abused a minor.  A man alleged that Kavanagh molested him while he was a minor attending the Cathedral Preparatory Seminary, where Kavanagh served as rector.  Kavanagh denied the allegations, although Kavanagh allegedly wrote a letter in 1984 that appears to substantiate the allegations. A statement from the Archdiocese of New York noted that a church court empowered by the Vatican found Kavanagh “guilty of acts of sexual abuse of a minor in the 1970’s, and dismissed him from the priesthood.”  The statement further discussed the proceedings of the canonical trial requested by Kavanagh.
